What is LIFE?

LIFE is the only financial programme of the European Union exclusively dedicated to the environment. With a budget of €3.4 billion allocated for the period 2021-2027, it aims at contributing to sustainable development and achieving the objectives and goals of the Strategy EUROPE 2020 and the strategies and plans of the EU in the field of environment and climate. This program is divided into 2 sub-programs: one geared towards the environment, which represents 75% of the total funding, and the other one for climate change, with 25% of the budget.

Budget:

€864 million

Beneficiaries:

consortium of public and private bodies at the local level: councils, city councils, universities, public or private companies (including SMEs) and associations. Startups and entrepreneurs can also apply.

 

Priority area Climate change mitigation

Contributes to the development and implementation of EU policy and legislation on climate change mitigation, including its integration in all the political areas, particularly through the development, experimentation and demonstration of policy or management approaches, best practices and solutions for climate change mitigation. It also facilitates the development and implementation of integrated approaches, such as for climate change mitigation strategies and action plans at local, regional or national level,

It also contributes to developing and demonstrating innovative technologies, systems, methods and instruments that are suitable for being replicated, transferred or mainstreamed.

Priority area Climate change adaptation

Contributes to the development and implementation of EU policy on climate change adaptation, including its integration in all the political areas, particularly through the development, experimentation and demonstration of policy or management approaches, best practices and solutions for climate change adaptation, including ecosystem-based approaches. It also facilitates the development and implementation of integrated approaches, such as for climate change adaptation strategies and action plans at local, regional or national level, giving priority to ecosystem-based approaches.

It also contributes to developing and demonstrating innovative adaptation technologies, systems, methods and instruments that are suitable for being replicated, transferred or mainstreamed.

 

Priority area Environmental Governance and Information

Promotes awareness raising on environmental matters, including generating public and stakeholder support of Union policymaking in the field of the environment, and to promote knowledge on sustainable development. Supports the communication, management and dissemination of information on the field of climate, and facilitates the sharing of knowledge on successful climate solutions and practices. Promotes and contributes to improving the effective compliance and enforcement of European Union climate legislation. It also supports better environmental and climate governance at all levels, including better involvement of civil society, NGOs and local actors, in policy consultation and implementation.

This course is directed towards professionals from the public and private sector interested in climate change programs.
